Tattoo Aftercare: A Day-by-Day Healing Guide
By Emy · Updated June 2026 · 4 min read
A beautiful tattoo is half talent, half aftercare. How you treat your skin in the first weeks decides whether the lines stay crisp and the colours stay true — or fade and blur. The good news: healing is simple if you follow a few clear steps. Here is the routine I give every client.
The first 24 hours
Keep the initial covering on for the time your artist tells you (a few hours, or up to a day for protective film). When you remove it, wash your hands first, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap. Pat — never rub — dry with a clean paper towel, and apply a thin layer of the recommended balm. Less is more: a heavy coat suffocates the skin.
Days 2–14: the routine
- Wash gently 2–3 times a day with clean hands and mild soap.
- Moisturise with a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or balm.
- Let it breathe — wear loose clothing over the area.
- Expect light peeling and itching around days 4–10. This is normal.
The golden rules — what not to do
- Don't scratch or pick the flakes — you can pull out ink and scar the line.
- No soaking: avoid pools, the sea, hot tubs and long baths until fully healed.
- No direct sun on a fresh tattoo — UV is the number-one cause of fading.
- Skip the gym sauna and heavy sweating for the first week or two.
Protect it for life
Once healed, the single best thing you can do is apply SPF whenever the tattoo sees the sun. This is especially important in a sunny city like Antalya — sunscreen keeps your design sharp for decades.

How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface usually heals in about 2–3 weeks, while the deeper skin settles over 1–2 months. Fine-line work tends to heal quickly because the trauma to the skin is minimal.
Can I swim or go to the gym with a new tattoo?
Avoid pools, the sea and heavy sweating until the tattoo is fully closed — usually at least two weeks. Soaking and bacteria are the main risks.
Why is my tattoo peeling and itchy?
Light peeling and itching are normal. Never scratch or pick — keep it lightly moisturised and let the flakes fall away on their own.
